Having forgotten most of my school French learned many decades ago, I joined Sandrine's French class eight years ago. It's great. Apart from learning French, there is such a wonderful sense of camaraderie; many of us have been together in her class for some years and we feel almost like an extended family when we meet. As someone who had followed no academic courses for 25 years, it was with some trepidation that I decided to improve my French. I needed a teacher who is patient, tolerant, understanding, and has a sense of humour; someone who will provide a structured learning process, leavened with insights into the French nation and culture, taking pains to deal with queries as they arise, and always encouraging students to progress. I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. We were a happy bunch who immediately got on well together, trying our French on each other as well as any opportunities in restaurants and transport!  Lille was very friendly, the student bar we discovered for a pastis aperitif gave us a warm welcome. 'Sandrine's classes have enabled me, in 3 years, to make myself understood in Brittany where I visit as often as I can. I still struggle with the speed the language is spoken, but I am no longer out of the conversation! This winter I have a painting exhibition in Paris and feel confident enough to give a speech in French at the opening. Sandrine always prepares the classes well, with a good balance between grammar, speaking about current affairs and what we have been doing, and more recently, literature. The classes are always fun, and have been a high point of my week during the pandemic (on Skype). I feeI I have improved and gained confidence and am able to chat in French with my French friends. I thought the ten “students”, their tutor and partner made up a very diverse group that got on really well. Variously, we practiced our French for a whole two days. Lille is certainly “worth a visit” as they say in the Michelin travel guides with so much to see. The visit to the LAM art museum entailed travel by both Metro and bendy-bus, furthering our French adventure. The spiritualist “art brut” by Crespin, Lesage and Simon seemed similar to what might adorn a Hindu or Buddhist temple. The visit certainly provoked discussion. Eating at the Alcide bistro, the creperie and the café at the museum was a further part of the French experience. Thank you Sandrine! Colin Hayes
